Maâti Monjib leads associations defending press freedom and investigative journalism in Morocco. Convicted in absentia in 2021 of threatening state security and fraud, he spent nearly three months in pretrial detention, including a hunger strike, before his provisional release in March 2021. A royal pardon covered the conviction in July 2024, but a money-laundering investigation remains open and he is still barred from leaving Morocco.
