Who is responsible for this website
HuMENA for Human Rights and Civic Engagement, based in Brussels, Belgium, is responsible for this website and for the personal information described below. You can reach us at [email protected].
What this notice covers
This notice covers the public website and the forms published on it. It does not cover the separate channels through which HuMENA receives case information, nor the platforms we link out to, such as our social media accounts. Those platforms publish their own notices and we do not control them.
Information you give us directly
Contact and partnership messages
When you write to us through a form on this site, we receive the information you type into it, which normally includes your name, your email address and your message. We use it to read and answer you. Messages are delivered by email to a HuMENA mailbox through MailerSend, an email delivery service that sends them on our behalf and does not use them for its own purposes. They are not passed to anyone else.
Subscribing to updates
If you subscribe, we receive your email address and your name where you choose to give it. Right after, you may choose the newsletter language, the areas of work and the countries you want to hear about; if you choose nothing, you receive everything. The list and your choices are kept with MailerLite, which sends our updates on our behalf. You confirm your subscription through a link we email you (double opt-in), and every message carries an unsubscribe link. You can also unsubscribe by writing to us.
Please note: a form on a website is ordinary web traffic. It is protected in transit by HTTPS, but it is not a confidential or anonymous channel and should not be treated as one. If you need to reach us about something sensitive, please write to us first and ask for an appropriate channel.
Information collected automatically
Server logs
Our hosting provider records ordinary web server logs, which include the IP address making the request, the page requested, the time, and the browser identification string your browser sends. These logs exist so the site can be kept running and secure. They are not used to build a profile of you.
Cookies and similar technologies
This site uses very few cookies. The consent tool stores your cookie choice so that you are not asked again on every page. WordPress sets a session cookie for members of the HuMENA team while they are signed in to edit the site.
The current, generated list of cookies actually found on this site is published on our cookie policy page. You can change your choice at any time from the controls on that page.
Things this website does not do
We think it is as useful to say what is absent as what is present. This website carries no analytics or measurement service, no advertising or retargeting technology, no social media tracking pixels, no embedded maps that call outside servers, and no shop, payment or donation processing of any kind. A YouTube player is loaded on a page only when that page contains a video and only after you accept marketing cookies. If any of these are added later, this notice will be updated before they go live.
Services we rely on, and what they receive
Website hosting. The site runs on servers operated by Hetzner Online GmbH in Germany, which processes the server logs described above on our behalf.
Network protection and delivery. Requests to humena.org pass through Cloudflare, which protects the site against attacks and delivers it faster. Cloudflare sees the IP address and the page requested, as any network in that position does, and may set a strictly necessary security cookie when it checks for automated traffic. Because it handles the encrypted connection, what you send through our forms also passes through Cloudflare on its way to us; it processes it only to deliver it, on our behalf.
Email from the site. Contact and partnership messages are delivered to us through MailerSend.
Newsletter. Subscriptions are kept with MailerLite (see above).
Backups. A copy of the site is made every night and encrypted on our server before it leaves it. The encrypted copies are stored with Scaleway in France for 35 days and then deleted. Scaleway cannot read them.
Web fonts and maps. Every typeface and the country outlines used by the maps are served from our own server (map data: Natural Earth, public domain). No page requests a font, map tile or location from an outside provider.
YouTube. On the few pages that embed a video, the player loads only after you accept marketing cookies in the cookie banner; YouTube then sets its own cookies. On every other page nothing is requested from YouTube, whatever you chose.
Why we are allowed to process this information
We answer your messages because you asked us to, and because we have a legitimate interest in corresponding with the people who contact us. We send updates only where you have subscribed. We keep server logs because we have a legitimate interest in operating a secure and functioning website. Cookies that are not strictly necessary are set only where you have consented.
How long we keep it
Correspondence is kept for as long as it remains useful to the work it concerns, and is then deleted. Subscription details are kept until you unsubscribe. Server logs are kept for a short operational period and then rotated away. Encrypted backups are kept for 35 days.
Who else sees it
We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for anyone else’s marketing. It is seen by HuMENA staff who need it, and by the service providers named above acting on our instructions.
Your rights
If you are in the European Union or the United Kingdom you have the right to ask what we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive it in a portable form. You may also withdraw consent at any time where we relied on it, and you may complain to your national data protection authority.
To exercise any of these, write to [email protected].
Changes
When this notice changes materially we will say so on this page. Last updated: 27 October 2026.
