Your Excellency,

I am writing to demand the immediate lifting of the arbitrary travel ban imposed on Maâti Monjib, historian and journalist; President of Freedom Now; co-founder of the Moroccan Association for Investigative Journalism in Morocco.

In brief: Maâti Monjib leads associations defending press freedom and investigative journalism in Morocco. Convicted in absentia in 2021 of threatening state security and fraud, he spent nearly three months in pretrial detention, including a hunger strike, before his provisional release in March 2021. A royal pardon covered the conviction in July 2024, but a money-laundering investigation remains open and he is still barred from leaving Morocco.

I respectfully urge your authorities to:
  1. Immediately lift the travel ban imposed on Maâti Monjib and on any family members affected by the same order;
  2. Restore valid travel documents and remove any border-watch flags placed in connection with peaceful human rights work;
  3. Comply with the ICCPR Article 12 guarantee of freedom of movement;
  4. Immediately unfreeze the personal and organisational accounts of Maâti Monjib.

I will continue to monitor this case until Maâti Monjib's freedom of movement is restored.

Respectfully,
