Digital space is increasingly contested terrain for civic actors in the MENA region. Governments deploy surveillance technologies, criminalize online expression, manipulate social media platforms, and use cybercrime laws to suppress dissent. At the same time, digital tools remain essential for organizing, documenting, and communicating.
HuMENA works at this intersection — defending digital rights while supporting the use of civic technology for human rights. We monitor digital repression, advocate for platform accountability, contribute to policy discussions on data protection and online freedoms, and support defenders whose digital security is at risk.
