Egypt

Egypt represents the largest share of HuMENA’s country-specific work, reflecting both the scale of the human rights crisis and the depth of our engagement with Egyptian civil society.

Since the dramatic closure of civic space following 2013, Egypt has maintained one of the most restrictive environments for human rights in the region. Tens of thousands of political prisoners remain detained. NGO legislation criminalizes independent civil society work. Media freedom is severely curtailed. Human rights defenders, journalists, academics, and activists face systematic prosecution.

HuMENA monitors individual cases, issues urgent statements on detentions and legal proceedings, contributes to coalition advocacy at the UN and EU levels, and produces in-depth analysis of the legal and political frameworks shaping civic space in Egypt.
